As the saying goes: The Journey is the destination. This is especially true for Crete, as you constantly come across interesting areas and places. After spending the winter in Mirtos and a few days in Matala, we headed to Plakias.
After a few kilometers you could stop again: Phaistos is on the way, one of the great Minoan palaces and an enchanting place. The Minoans really knew where to build. From Phaistos (where the famous Diskos was found) they had a great view of the picturesque Messara plain. Also worth seeing is the archaeological site of Agia Triada nearby, from Minoan times as well.
Enchanting beach
A must-see is Preveli, this fantastic beach with a palm grove with an idyllic little river running through it. Preveli loses much of its charm in the summer, when tour boats unload masses of tourists, but it is beautiful in the early or late season. On the way there, a beautifully curved Ottoman bridge catches the eye, a few hundred meters further you will find the enchanted walls of the old Preveli monastery. Founded in the 16th century, it developed into one of the richest monasteries in Crete before being destroyed in the early 19th century during the Cretans' resistance struggle against the Turkish occupiers. Currently it cannot be visited, but from the road you have a pretty good view.
On the whole route, Crete has shown a side that we do not know from our travels in late summer or autumn: as a blooming green landscape, with countless colorful flowers and blossoms. So, it is alright to have some rain sometimes.
