Matala is world famous. So is the legendary VW bulli. This supposed hippie accessory can be found everywhere in the small village with the well known name: on facades, on pub tables, on T-shirts, as a magnet for the refrigerator, as a model car.
Matala, situated on Crete's south coast, benefits from its past. In the 60s, it was a magnet for hippies from all over the world, who made themselves comfortable in the caves of a impressive sandstone wall above the beach. Caves, by the way, that were already inhabited in the Neolithic Age and which later were used as burial sites.
Matala maintains its hippie history and attracts countless visitors every year. Everyone wants to see it - almost like Knossos - and so it is more than crowded in the summertime.
Now, at the beginning of April, Matala looks different. There are already tourists, but only so many that you can still see something of Matala itself. And so the (empty) beach including the world famous cave panorama really comes into its own. And it is really worth seeing.
As well as the sandstone formations of the surrounding area, which can also be found on the other side of the bay of Matala. There, for example, you can hike to the famous "Red Beach", a beautiful reddish-yellow sandy beach. The path there is demanding, but offers magnificent views.
Now, in spring, only some of the numerous bars and taverns are open in Matala, the souvenir shops are waiting for the first customers. Craftsmen are at work everywhere, pepping up the place for the big rush.
Typical for Matala and to be seen in every film about the place is a graffito on the beach. Today is life, tomorrow never comes, it says. You can see it that way - especially in Matala.
