Eine geheimnisvolle Höhle und die Traumstrände von Balos und Elafonisi (oben, von links nach rechts). Polirrinia und Falassarna - und Kretas Schafe stehen natürlich oft im Mittelpunkt (unten).
A mysterious cave and the dream beaches of Balos and Elafonisi (above, from left to right). Polirrinia and Falassarna - and Crete's sheep are in the middle (below).
The far northwest corner of Crete is one of the more unknown parts of the island - except, of course, the tourist attraction Balos. The main town Kissamos is not particularly worth seeing, but it is the starting point for exciting tours. Tours through lonely areas, but also to the dream beaches of Elafonisi and Balos.
Let's start with the unknown. We drive south on a ring road from Kissamos and after a few kilometers, near the village of Potamida, we come across a unique landscape: Komolithi, bizarre mounds of clay, formed by erosion into towers and pyramids. They are probably sediments, deposited millions of years ago in what was then the sea. Such formations, somewhat reminiscent of Cappadocia in Turkey, are otherwise found on Crete only on the island of Koufounisi in the far southeast.
Next destination: The cave Agia Sofia or “Cave of the Wisdom of God” at the edge of the Topolia Gorge. You have to climb many steps to get to the entrance. But it´s really worth it. The stalactite cave, associated with numerous legends and stories, is named after an icon that was supposedly rescued from Constantinople.
From the southern edge of the ring road, a small road leads to Elafonisi with its wonderful sandy beaches, which, however, can be well visited even in spring.
On the way back to Kissamos the ring road offers great views of the western coast. A side trip to Falassarna is a must: beautiful sandy beach and the remains of the ancient port city.
But there is more to see and do in the area: for example, a tour to the ruins of the ancient city of Polirrinia high on a mountain (today a remote village in the middle of nowhere), or hikes on the peninsulas of Gramvousa and Rodopou. In any case, the trip to the northwest is worthwhile.
