You can´t help all cats. But maybe at least one, as a start? - We met the little street tomcat a year ago when we spent the winter in Mirtos for the first time.
He was always close to where we were staying at that time and he became more and more affectionate. A few weeks ago, when we came back, we met him there again. At first everything seemed ok, but then he became thinner and thinner, sniffing and retching.
"You can't watch this," said our friend Marianna when she came to visit Mirtos. And Marianna, it should be noted, is a passionate animal lover who has already taken several dogs and cats under her wing. She immediately wrote a message to the vet she already knows perfectly well. "You can go to her tomorrow." We, the newcomers to cat rescue, were at a bit of a loss. "Get a cat box, put him in and off you go", she said.
And so began an international cooperation. After Marianna's encouragement (she is originally from Hungary), we met friends from Switzerland in the tavern who knew a cat box owner from Holland, and he immediately lent us the box.
Looking for adventure
We picked up the cat on the street, put him into the box with kind words and some food, took him in the car and drove the few kilometers to the doctor. The vet diagnosed a painful inflammation of the palate, which had made the tomcat really lose appetite, and gave him an injection.
The cat, who has endured the whole procedure without complaining, is getting better day by day. He looks forward to his food, which we bring him every day, and he is really lively again. And affectionate. After a second injection a week later, things got even better. When he sees us, he jumps up and is visibly happy.
And he is becoming really adventurous. In the past, he didn't dare leave his little territory, turning back immediately when he saw an unknown cat. Now he often accompanies us a long way, even down to the sea these days, which he had obviously never seen before. There is a lot of cat activity on the beach - but the encounters with the local "gangs" were completely peaceful and without any problems. After all, the cat had his two-legged protectors with him. Us.
It's no big deal to help an individual cat a little. Even if it's just some food, an injection or two - and a little support to become more confident and feel more comfortable in their own environment. Ετσι ειναι η ζωη - that's life.
