Ein- und Ausblicke in Agios Nicolaos: Nette Boote, ein geheimnisvoller See, steile Treppen, die schöne Europa, der weite Golf - und kunstvolle Wasserleitungen aus minoischer Zeit.
Agios Nikolaos, the small town in the east of Crete, has hit the jackpot: its location on the wide Gulf of Mirabello is fantastic. Wherever you look, the view is magnificent. To small islands, to the deep blue sea, to the imposing mountains on the other side of the bay, or from above to the mysterious lake, which is connected to the sea by a small canal. No wonder Agios, as everyone here calls it, is teeming with tourists in summer. Now, in early spring, it is simply beautiful.
It is named after St. Nicholas, who is very popular on Crete. He has time here to look after the little town, as a colleague has taken over the busy Christmas business in Greece: St. Vassilios, the patron saint of seafaring.
A visit to Zeus and Europa
Agios is situated on a hilly peninsula. It is fun to stroll through the shopping streets or walk along the sea. From the marina to the town beach of Ammoudi with its mostly calm, clear water. Along the way, the sculpture of Zeus in the form of a bull with the beautiful Europa on his back is well worth seeing. As is the lake, which is bordered on one side by a steep rock face and is the subject of many stories.
Some say it is unfathomably deep, others say it is "only" just over 60 meters deep. Many things have supposedly disappeared into it, all kinds of war equipment for example, and it is even said to have a connection with the distant island of Santorini. However, it is a romantic place and you should take the time to enjoy the view from one of the cafés at the top of the cliff.
Treasures from the palaces
The Archaeological Museum of Agios is also worth a visit, a modern and carefully presented collection of numerous finds from eastern Crete, from the Minoan palace of Malia to that of Kato Zakros, from Mochlos to Gournia, even from the small island of Chrissi. Unfortunately, the museum in Konstantinou Paleologou Street is currently only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 am to 3 pm.
