Spring is here and Crete shows its best side. Colorful wildflowers everywhere, the orange trees are starting to bloom, the trees that have lost their leaves are getting new ones: The spirit of change everywhere. Time for us to leave our winter quarters in Mirtos and see a bit more of the island. Before we are heading back to Germany.
Saying goodbye to Mirtos - after more than four months - was not easy. The village on the southeast coast has become very familiar to us, we have met many great people. It was nice to leave the apartment in the morning, buy fresh bread, say hello to the sea. Going for long walks, exploring the villages in the surrounding mountains, strolling along the beach and waterfront, often driving the 15 kilometers to Ierapetra, after all the southernmost city of Europe.
The sundowner with sundown by the sea, the evenings with many nice and interesting conversations in the taverns. It was our everyday life and we will miss it.
International Flair
In summer Mirtos attracts numerous tourists, in winter it has a very special atmosphere. Besides the Cretans who stay in their village even in the colder season, people from whole Europe and other countries live here, some for many years, some - like us - a few weeks or months. So, it's a village with an international flair, a positive version of people from many regions living together. Characterized by tolerance and the consensus "live and let live" - in other words, as it should actually be normal.
In our last days in Mirtos we were quite busy. We had to say goodbye to all those who had become friends, to the owners of the taverns who had made us feel welcome during the winter. Now we are off, but as we hope, just for a few months.
So, the tears are dried, and we are on the road again. First stop: the world-famous Matala. More about that soon.
