An infinite number of steps lead more than 80 meters into the depths. Through a fabulous world populated by countless grotesque figures. Every step, every new perspective reveals further wonders. These are often scary figures with long, pointed teeth. And here you think you see a mummy, there a grim demon, there a skeleton. But Zeus, the mighty father of the gods, is also said to be hiding somewhere here. I have never actually seen him. But they say he was born here.
Here - this is the Zeus-Cave on the edge of the village of Psychro in the southwest of the Lassithi plateau. With its abundance of stalagmites and stalactites, some of which form huge columns, this fantastic world is a well-known and popular excursion destination. Now, in December, only a few visitors descend into the depths apart from us. And so we can take in the magic of the place in peace.
It is no wonder that this cave - called Diktaion Antron - has magically attracted people since Minoan and Mycenaean times. It was a place of worship and numerous ancient artifacts and offerings were discovered after it was rediscovered in the 19th century.
The saying that the gods put sweat before success proves to be true here. A steep path winds its way up to the Zeus Cave for almost a kilometer to the entrance, which looks like a gigantic hole in the ground with walls that plunge almost vertically. From there, the long, dimly lit concrete staircase leads down to the floor of the accessible part, which is always covered with a little water. A second staircase leads back up to the daylight. But it is worth the effort, and the view from the top over the flat, wide Lassithi plain is second to none.
