Angela Sturmayr kennt auch die abgelegenen Pfade. Bei manchen Touren ist sogar ein kleiner Kochkurs inklusive. Rund um Mirtos sind die Wanderwege gut markiert.

For many people it´s a great vacation activity, for Angela Sturmayr it is also a profession: hiking on Crete. Born in Austria, she has lived on the island for more than 35 years, for 16 years in Mirtos on the southeast coast. She is a certified hiking guide. Angela is one of those people who also know the world-famous Samaria Gorge in western Crete like the back of her hand. For eight years, she says, she walked through it almost every week with hiking groups. Meanwhile, she usually offers tours in the east of Crete, an area characterized by wild, unique nature, by the tension between mountains and sea.
Fascinating Nature
What makes this area so fascinating? "It is the relatively untouched nature in the Cretan mountains, the scent of wild herbs and in spring the explosion of flowers everywhere you look." She prefers to hike on the so-called Kalderimis, the stone-paved mule paths, which were the most important connecting routes in old times. Angela Sturmayr, mother of three children, offers day tours (maximum eight people) and multi-day hiking tours (four to 12 people). In addition, "slow travel" with only short hikes, but encounters with interesting people, sightseeing, information about Crete away from tourism. That´s about cheese production, the production of olive oil, herbs, fruits, old seeds. Often Greek cuisine is also an important topic - including cooking classes, in which gyros and souvlaki do not play the main role.
Walking Tours around Mirtos
The fact that the small village of Mirtos is now the starting point for a lot of hiking tours on marked trails is not least due to Angela Sturmayr. In 2012 she started the project "Mirtos Hiking Village" with supporters. Various routes were selected, marked with colored dots or triangles, signposts were set up. Every year, Angela checks the paths, renews markings, checks if everything is okay. And seven years ago, a hiking guide "Discover Mirtos on Foot" was published, which is now available in various languages. It is part of a series of similar publications by Berend Wolffenbuttel and Toine van der Meijden, who give tips on hiking throughout Crete (www.discoveronfoot.com). Angela, who is now married to a Dutchman, speaks fluently German, English, Greek and Dutch. Best conditions to show international hiking groups the beauties of Crete.
