It is world famous: The palm beach of Vai in northeastern Crete is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, if not in Europe. Actually... A slightly curved bay with beautiful clear water, fine sand and the famous palm trees that form an entire forest. But: Vai is a tourist magnet in summer. Understandable, but annoying. The parking lot is full of cars, masses of visitors provide a bathing lake atmosphere.
We are curious to see how Vai is now, at the end of November. And so, the palm beach becomes the first excursion destination of our winter project. And indeed - we have Vai to ourselves. The parking lot is closed, the wonderful beach deserted. For the experience of swimming alone here, without crowds and shouting, you are happy to accept that the water is a bit less than 20 degrees.
Not so bad, and a little coldness from time to time is considered healthy.
Ok, you can also visit Vai in summer. Preferably at 8 or 9 in the morning, before the “invasion” breaks in. Or in the late afternoon. A big plus: Vai is quite remote, and nothing is built up here. There is a restaurant, but there are no hotels or other accommodation.
But how did the palm trees get to the area around Vai? Was it the Saracens who are said to have landed there in 824 to harass Crete, eating the dates they brought with them and spitting out the stones? It is reported like this. But the Cretans have always done well without invaders, the palm has long been native to the island and is known as the "Cretan palm". These trees you´ll also find in Preveli in the south, another one of the super beaches, but let's see if we get there this winter.
