In Crete a lot of things are a bit different. Our New Year's walk, for instance. On the "Minoan Path". It is extraordinary. Extraordinarily beautiful, extraordinarily exhausting.
The "Minoan Path" starts in the village of Mithi above Mirtos. It is really a path, and it is four kilometers uphill. A rocky trail, difficult to walk, but with fascinating rock structures and views at every turn. A good physical condition is just as helpful as good shoes and dry weather. We pass ancient trees, a bat cave. After a few hundred meters a real highlight: the "Kastello Charaki", off the path. A bit of climbing to a rocky plateau, no buildings, but numerous ancient shards - such as from amphorae - can be found. And spectacular views of the Libyan Sea. The path continues uphill to a kind of plateau, which should be a sea of flowers in two months. You reach a largely abandoned settlement, a pilgrimage chapel. Great, from now on it is only downhill, we are happy. But the way down is not so easy, often just a barely recognizable steep gravel road full of scree. After eleven kilometers we made it and are happy that the good resolutions (more sport) have already been realized a little bit.
But why is the path called the "Minoan Path". Well, because King Minos is said to have sat in the village square in Mithi thousands of years ago and told stories (myths!) with his buddies, the people of Mithi say. But, more likely, because there was probably already a trail in Minoan times (2600 to 1450 BC), when the first European high culture existed in Crete. Zeus, the Greek god, played a decisive role in this heyday. One day he discovered the king's daughter Europa on a Phoenician beach, in today's Lebanon. He liked her very much, so he quickly turned into a strong bull, ingratiated himself, and when Europa sat on his back, he started. Of course to Crete, the birthplace of Zeus. Zeus and Europa eventually had children, including Minos. He became king and founded the mighty empire, which is now called Minoan. And this story is told not only by the people of Mithi, but by all Greeks.
P.S. Today, as we all know, Europe is not just a beautiful princess. It is, as one reads here and there, "the land north of Crete".
We wish you a Happy New Year
