Christmas Eve. I usually go to the terrace in the morning, where a fir or spruce tree is waiting for me. I put it into the stand, carry the tree into the room, where it then gets decorated. If you are very lucky, it will start snowing in the afternoon.
This morning I´m going to the sea. The water is calm, the sun makes a real effort again and promises that we can swim later. Then we are having breakfast on the balcony. Christmas Eve very different. Strange, needs getting used to. A bit of melancholy.
There is not much to feel of Christmas here in Mirtos. The trees still bear their leaves, the flowers bloom undaunted. Here and there hang a few colorful garlands and a few colorful lights that will flash frantically later. A boat is decorated with a string of lights, here and there a Christmas tree made of plastic. We are going to the beach. The temperature of the water is still comfortable. Then we are driving to Ierapetra, the next town. Looking for a bit of Christmas atmosphere. In fact, there is a kind of Christmas market. Rather a small flea market with half a dozen plain market stands, most of them closed. Nearby a large crib with colorful figures, a Christmas tree, a “Santa Claus” made of plastic. He´s called Saint Vassilios here in Greece. "Ai Vassilis" also brings the gifts, but only on New Year's Day.
Later it gets loud at the Christmas market. Pop music. Contemplation? No. It is loud and cheerful. Christmas Eve is party time.
In the evening back in Mirtos. Christmas Eve is not an issue here. The few shops are open, the hairdresser is very busy. You want to be chic on Christmas Day.
We are drinking wine in Corina's pub on the small waterfront. The artificial fir tree that has been standing here for weeks is flashing. Everything is the same as every evening.
The highest religious festival in Greece is not Christmas, but Easter. It fits better in a country where winter is more like spring.
