It was never boring in Crete: Brian, Angela and the Brexit
Brian and Angela from Wales have lived mostly in Mirtos in recent years. Now they have terminated their rental contract with a heavy heart and are having to give up their cottage in Crete. After Britain left the EU, it has become too complicated for them.
The story began almost 20 years ago. Brian and Angela were in Mirtos on the southeast coast of Crete for the first time. As tourists. "We looked around. The place had a certain charm, the people were very friendly." Ten years later, a good opportunity arose by chance: friends wanted to rent a small house in Mirtos, but then changed their mind - and Angela and Brian stepped in. They rented the somewhat run-down cottage in the middle of the village and gradually renovated it thoroughly. Brian was able to leave his job in 2014, Angela retired in 2017. Since then, they regularly spend the period from October to May in Mirtos and have almost become locals.
That is no longer possible. British citizens are only allowed to stay three months in the EU. Then they have to leave in order to be allowed to come again for 90 days after a three-month waiting period. Organizing all this is a science in itself, say Angela and Brian. It would also mean that they would have to spend some of the summer in Crete, but then of course there are a lot of tourists and it is very hot.
Brian and Angela appreciate the quiet time, the silence in winter and the fantastic spring when the vegetation gives its best and Crete shows its most beautiful side before the summer dries everything up. But did the two never get bored, year in and year out in Crete?
"No, actually never," says Angela. "You organize your everyday life here, lead a normal life, but in a much more pleasant climate." They made many trips and explored the island, went swimming, hiking. And even the "socializing".” It is absolutely interesting to meet many people of different nationalities.” In fact, the village of Mirtos is also a meeting place for people from many European countries in winter.
After so many years in Crete - what do Brian and Angela appreciate most about the island? They do not have to think twice: the climate and the culture, the scenic beauty - and the friendliness and hospitality of the people. "It's incredible," says Angela. "We don’t experience that in the UK."
